New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a Part-Time Monday-Friday 8:00AM-12:00 PM 20 hr./week Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist to join our in-house Laboratory Team in our Scarborough Clinic. The Laboratory Medical Assistant will give top line care to a wide variety of patients dealing with cancer and blood disorders. A strong phlebotomy background is required. Duties include phlebotomy, ability to collect samples using a variety of techniques, monitoring lab results as needed, scheduling follow-up lab appointments, entering and accessing patient information from the EMR, maintaining the specimen collection room, inventorying, and managing supplies. The Lab Medical assistant is a vital member of the NECS care model and is often the first clinician that patients see during an appointment.

. Job Duties:

  • Collects various blood samples using a variety of techniques including venipuncture in the antecubital region of the arm and smaller veins of the hand and wrist.
  • Assesses each patient's vein structure and selects the appropriate needle size and equipment needed for a successful phlebotomy experience.
  • Uses professional judgement and follows all practice HIPAA guidelines.
  • Assisting patients in the lab area by filling lab prescriptions, reviewing labs being drawn, providing information on tests and what they accomplish and why they are needed.
  • Helps the Research Department by ensuring proper specimen collection.
  • Monitors pending lab statuses of all outside labs and places follow up calls to track overdue results.
  • Maintains the specimen collection room, which includes preparing, cleaning, and ordering and stocking o supplies.
  • Intramuscular and Subcutaneous injections on various body sites
  • Assist physicians and lab staff with procedures as needed.
  • EKGs

Monday-Friday work week, no nights.
Weekends: Periodic: this position participates with other medical assistants in the weekend urgent care coverage 4-5 times per year.
Travel: Rare

Experience and Skills:

Medical Assistant Qualifications

  • Must have a degree or certificate in Medical Assisting from an accredited school of Medical Assistance. 2-year associate degree in a Credentialed Medical Assistant program strongly preferred.
  • You must have (1) of the following credentials or be eligible to obtain (1) of the following credentials, based upon the credentialing organization's eligibility requirements within 90 days of hire:
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)- from AAMA, American Association of Medical Assistants
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from AMT, American Medical Technologists
    • Certified Clinical medical Assistant (CCMA) from NHA, National Health Career Association
    • National Certified medical Assistant (NCMA) from NCCT, National Center for Competency Testing
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from ARMA, American Registry of Medical Assistants
    • National Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) from the NAHP, National Association for Health Professional.
  • Must have proven strong phlebotomy skills.
  • Experience with and ability to understand patient medical records, physician's orders and medical orders.
  • Understand and conduct yourself in accordance with accepted clinical standards and the ability to maintain strict HIPPA compliance.
  • High level of computer skills and experience with electronic medical records (EMR's) is required.
  • Ability to communicate with patients, family members, co-workers, and providers in an effective and compassionate way.
  • Must have high level oral and written communication skills, typing skills are required.

Phlebotomist Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have a certificate in Phlebotomy from an accredited school.
  • PBT/MLA Preferred, certificate agencies ASCP, AMT or NHA
  • Must have 2+ years of experience in Phlebotomy.
  • Experience with and ability to understand patient medical records, physician's orders, and medical orders.
  • Understand and conduct yourself in accordance with accepted clinical standards and the ability to maintain strict HIPPA compliance.
  • High level of computer skills and experience with electronic medical records (EMR's) is required.
  • Ability to communicate with patients, family members, co-workers and providers in an effective and compassionate way.
  • Must have a high level of oral and written communication skills, typing skills are required.
