New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking Part-time 24 hr./3-day RN Care Managers known internally as Nurse Navigators to work directly with physician led teams within our Scarborough Clinic.  Experience in oncology, preferred. RNs with ED experience, Acute Care management, or with a strong desire to work in oncology are encouraged to apply.  Willing to train dedicated RNs with a willingness to learn.  This position is eligible for up to a sign-on bonus paid after 90 days of employment. 

RN Care Managers use oncology clinical knowledge to offer individualized care to patients, families, and caregivers to help navigate along the health care continuum. They provide nursing assessments and the triage of patient care needs over the phone and in the office. Offering advice and counsel to patients as well as advising physicians of patient needs and recommended interventions.   They work collaboratively with physicians, APP’s, RN peers, Patient Care Coordinators, and other clinical and non-clinical personal within and outside the practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
  • Assist physicians; conduct patient assessments.
  • Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient’s specific needs promptly. Alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.
  • Follow up with patients as needed by telephone, to ensure compliance with treatment guidelines and to evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations.
  • Draw blood from ports, central lines, and peripheral IV access. Perform other procedures as needed.
  • Ensures follow-up appointments and tests/procedures are scheduled for patients.
  • Maintain patient care standards and assures that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment, and documentation are completed safely and effectively.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with all physicians, employees, and vendors.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in-services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations, and community-sponsored programs specific to Oncology and Hematology.
  • Incorporates evidence-based research into clinical practice and provide recommendations on practice clinical policies and processes to practice Directors
  • Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed health care providers.
  • Demonstrates respect for the life, dignity, and rights of all persons.

Travel: Rare. 

Weekends: Occasional; this position will participate with other nurses in the weekend urgent care coverage rotation. 4-5 times per year.

**Current and former NECS employees are not eligible for  sign on bonus. 

Experience and Skills:

  • Licensed Nurse within the State of Maine required
  • 2-5 years plus nursing professional experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Two years of Hematology/Chemotherapy/Oncology nursing experience preferred
  • OCN Certification Preferred
  • Must have ONS Chemotherapy & Bio-therapy Certification or have the ability to get certification within 3 months of employment supported through the orientation process.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and staff
  • Must be detail-oriented, have strong follow-up skills, and be able to manage multiple priorities.
