Job Description:

New England Cancer Specialists, New England’s largest private oncology practice is seeking a Financial Controller with expertise in the healthcare field to add to our stellar finance team. This position will work on-site out of our Scarborough Maine financial office a minimum of two days per week and be comfortable remotely when not in the office. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will lead day-to-day finance operations and be the primary resource for finance team members. Functional responsible for accounting, accounts payable, non-patient accounts receivable, payroll, and retirement plan compliance. The controller will ensure that NECS has the financial systems and procedures in place to support practice goals and objectives. The Controller, in conjunction with the CFO, will be involved in communication and presentations to internal and external stakeholders including practice leadership and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support operations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, department budgets, and actual expenditures.
  • Provide direction and support to finance staff as needed.
  • Review payroll process for accuracy including multi-state complexities and retirement plan calculation compliance.
  • Coordinate all review and audit activity including all data requests.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and meet with CFO regularly to review results.
  • Support the CFO in engaging the board’s finance and strategy committee around issues and trends identified through analysis of financial data.
  • Primarily responsible for the budget cycle process including being a resource for department leaders as they prepare their annual budgets; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and make recommendations to adjust variances as appropriate.
  • Oversee all financial accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with approved budgets; collate financial reporting materials for internal and external users.
  • Support organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the CFO; continuously collaborate with Senior Leadership to assess the financial efficacy of operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support operations.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Oversee all aspects of talent management for the finance team including performance management, recruitment and retention of staff, time management and approvals, and staff development.

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred.
  • CPA required
  • 7-10 years progressive experience in healthcare and finance required. Including accounting/auditing, reporting of financial information, and proven leadership of direct reports.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting with multiple locations through multiple states preferred
  • Experience in employee development and training required
  • Proven record of integrity, credibility, and commitment.
  • Experience coordinating review/audit activities and budget development/analysis required.
  • Experience with general ledger, payroll, and retirement plan compliance required.
  • Technology savvy with experience in selecting and overseeing software installations, managing relationships with vendors.
