Job Description:

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is expanding and is currently seeking a full time Certified Genetic Counselor to remotely provide family history assessment and cancer genetic counseling for our patients with cancer, a family history of cancer, and at risk for cancer utilizing telehealth services. Telehealth appointments are schedule Monday-Friday 8:00 AM Eastern Standard Time to 4:30 PM Eastern Standard Time.  The successful candidate will work with both patients in Maine and New Hampshire and must be able to obtain licensing through the State of New Hampshire.  Our Genetic Counselors are a vital part of the overall treatment of NECS’s patients, providing counseling, education, and support to an outpatient population working collaboratively with providers to give the best possible care as well as the best outcomes for our patients.

Job Duties:

  • Works with patients referred by NECS providers for a broad spectrum of cancer genetic syndromes and other rare cancer genetic conditions.
  • Completes 3-4 generation pedigrees for appropriate patients
  • Collects and evaluates the patient’s personal and family history to determine if appropriate genetic testing is needed. 
  • Evaluation of patient’s cancer risk and/or risk to carry cancer predisposing genetic mutations and appropriate use of available risk models
  • Psychosocial assessment patients
  • Educates patients on the process of the counseling program and the information that will be obtained. Is available to patients/families to answer questions about process.
  • Obtains informed consent and offers appropriate testing options
  • Provide post-test genetic counseling ensuring genetic test results are provided in the context of the patient’s personal, family history and or empiric data. Discuss significance and impact of test results and provide evidence-based guidelines & recommendations to the patients for cancer screening and prevention plans.  Risk reduction surgeries are discussed when appropriate.  Provide educational resources & referrals, as needed.
  • Works closely with the patient’s medical team and financial counselors to assist in determining healthcare coverage for testing options, assisting in the appeals process for insurance denials as needed and to assure appropriate testing occurs.
  • Support of ongoing and planned research efforts. 
  • Represents cancer genetics for the Maine Comprehensive Cancer Consortium and participates in related work groups and tumor boards (especially Molecular Tumor Board). Responsible for maintaining continuing education and attending related seminars.

This is a 100% Remote position. 

Experience and Skills:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited Genetic Counseling program, including clinical experience from an accredited genetics counseling training program required.
  • 1-5 years’ experience in a genetic counseling role with oncology counseling experience preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain licensing through the State of New Hampshire
  • American Board of Medical Genetics (ABGC) certified or able to obtain certification within one year of hire date.
  • Ability to triage, and multi-task multiple priorities.
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Ability to connect and interact with patients using telemedicine.
  • Maintaining regulatory and compliance issues to adhere to all related healthcare laws and regulations.
  • Ability to work remotely utilizing telehealth services with patients in the eastern time zone

This position will be eligible to receive a computer set up including laptop, double monitors, and docking station, a $50 monthly stipend to offset internet expenses and company paid cell phone for work purposes.
